Mysore, July 26- Liver transplantations will become common in India too.
Capsule Endoscopy and Robotic Endoscopy are the latest advances in
endoscopic diagnosis and treatment, eminent specialists told gathering of
City doctors at BGS Apollo Hospitals yesterday.
They were speaking at the programme 'Hepato Biliary Update' organised by
the Apollo Hospitals to appraise the doctors on the latest advances in the
diagnosis and treatment of liver and digestive track diseases.
The programme was inaugurated by Sri Someswaranath Swamiji of
Adichunchanagiri Mutt by lighting a lamp.
Dr. R.P. Wadhwa, Head of Gastroenterology Department of BGS Apollo
Hospitals spoke about the latest diagnostic tools available for
identifying different types of jaundice.
Dr. R. Surendran, eminent surgeon and Head of Surgical Gastroenterology
Department of Stanley Medical College, Chennai, spoke about the latest
advances in surgical treatment of various types of tumours in liver. He
underlined the need for pre-operative tests to be correctly chosen in
order to arrive at the right choice of surgical procedure.
He said that liver transplants will become common in India also in the
near future.
"Now it is rarely done in the country. Diagnostic methods and software are
available now," he added.
Dr. Amit Maydeo, a noted endoscopist from Mumbai and Director of Digestive
Diseases Centre, Mumbai, spoke on the advances in endoscopy both as a
diagnostic tool and as a treatment of blockages and stones in liver
pancreas and esophagus.
He highlighted the innovations undertaken at the DDC Mumbai to make
endoscopes and endoscopic therapy cost effective. In this connection he
explained how cheap 'stents' were developed at his Centre that would cost
only Rs. 500 compared with the imported stents costing several thousands.
Dr. Amit informed that 'Capsule endoscopy' and 'Robotic endoscopy' are the
latest advances in his field.
The discussions that took place following the three lectures were lively
with the local doctors actively participating and exchanging ideas.
