Dr. URA to present Bhasha Bharati awards

Mysore, July 20- The Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), with a view to encourage people learn the languages of other regions, has instituted Bhasha Bharati Samman Awards-2001 for the original works of authors written by them in any Indian language in the 8th Schedule other than their mother tongue (and Hindi, Sanskrit and English).

Jnanapith awardee Dr. U.R. Ananthamurthy will be presenting the awards at a function to be held in the Institute premises in August. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 25,000, a shawl and a memento.

The following authors have been selected for the awards:

Mr. Ram Bahal Tiwari for his work Suryakanta Tripathi Nirala in Bengali, Ms. Sarah Abubakar for Tala Odeda Doniyalli in Kannada, Mr. N. Dayalal Joshi for Jibanar Dhara in Oriya, Mr. Damodar Dilip Kumar for Kadavu in Tamil, Mr. R.M. Chidambaram for R.M. Chidambaram Kathalu in Telugu and Mr. Nizam Sheen Kaaf for Bayajein Kho Gai Hain in Urdu.

The selection of works for the award was done by about 100 experts and the final jury consisting of Prof. B.C. Ramachandra Sharma, Chairman (Bangalore), Mrs. Geetha Dharmarajan (Delhi), Prof. Aloke Bhalla (Hyderabad), Mr. K. Sachidanandan (Secretary, Sahitya Academy, New Delhi) and Prof. Udaya Narayan Singh (Director, CIIL, Mysore).-MA
