Syndicate's nod to Rizvi report
Indira goes to Women's Centre, 2 teachers to other Varsities

Mysore, July 6- Three faculty members of the Department of Studies in Sociology, University of Mysore, including its head Prof. R. Indira, have been moved out of the department in the back-drop of the incident of suicide by a post graduate student of the same department Siddappa some time ago.

The University has taken this decision on the basis of the report submitted by the retired Judge Syed Fazlulla Rizvi, who conducted a probe into the stu-dent's suicide, at the Syndicate meeting held at the Crawford Hall yesterday.

The meeting which started at 10.30 in the morning debated the above subject for three hours up-to 1.30 pm and took this final decision, according to a University official.

The meeting decided on transferring Prof. R. Indira, Head of the Department, whom the students had held indirectly responsible for the suicide of Sociology student Siddappa, as full-time Director of Women's Study Centre. Syndicate is also learnt to have decided to address a letter to the Government recommending the transfer of two other members of the faculty Dr. Paresh Kumar and Prof. Hadi-mani to another University.

The Syndicate is learnt to have accepted the view expressed by Mr. Rizvi in his report that there was no connection between Prof. Indira and the incident of suicide. It continued its meeting in the afternoon upto 5 pm.

Prof. S.N. Hegde, Vice Chancellor of University of Mysore presided. Registrar Mr. N.D. Tiwari was among the 11 who were present. Speaking to Star of Mysore, the Registrar disclosed that the decision of the Syndicate would be officially announced in a day.

Students had staged a movement two months ago demanding the dismissal of Prof. Indira, Dr. Paresh Kumar and other teachers of the Sociology Department charging that they were responsible for the suicide of Siddappa.

They had also abstained from classes for a few days and had stoned the buildings in Manasagangotri expressing their anger and insisted that their demands be met.

The students had withdrawn their agitation and returned to the classes on the assurance given to them that the Syndicate would discuss the matter, nominate the retired Judge Mr. Rizvi to enquire into the suicide incident of Siddappa and that action would be taken based on the report.

While the University Teachers' Association issued a statement that it would launch a struggle if the University took action against the teachers, the Student's Union had warned that the movement would be continued if action was not taken on the teachers.-BRS
