Four
leading personalities of Mysore are among the 56 persons and four
institutions conferred the annual Karnataka Rajyotsava awards. The awards
are made by the Karnataka Government on the occasion of the birth of the
enlarged Karnataka State on November 1.
Well-known writer and former Professor of Mysore University Dr. Pradhan
Gurudutt, famous musician Dr. Mysore M. Manjunath, popular light music
singer Ms. S.K.Vasumathi, and social worker Mr. K. Guru Rao are the four
Mysoreans presented with the 2003 Rajyotsava awards in Bangalore today.
The awards were presented by the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, at a
function to celebrate Rajyotsava.
Dr. Pradhan Gurudutt: A scholar in Hindi, Dr. Pradhan Gurudutt is well
known for his translations of Kannada works into Hindi and English
languages. Among his translations are the famous works of Dr. K.V.Puttappa
(Kuvempu) ‘Ramayana Darshanam’, and Dr.S.L.Bhyrappa’s famous novels
‘Bhithhi’, ‘Mandhra’ and ‘Daatu’ The magnum opus of late
Kuvempu has been translated into Hindi and English, while Dr. Bhyrappa’s
two novels into Hindi and ‘Daatu’ into English. He has also translated
the recent work of the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Mr. M. Veerappa
Moily, titled ‘Ramayana Mahanveshanam’ into Hindi. Dr.Gurudutt has won
accolades for his translations, which number around 150.
Even after retiring from the Mysore University, the Hindi scholar has a
number of translation projects on hand. Twenty-four translations out of 48
works introducing the Central Sahitya Academy (Central Literary Academy)
awardees have already seen print, while the rest are under progress. He is
also planning translation of the 1600-page famous Hindi work ‘Jhoota
Sach’ of renowned Hindi writer Yashpal into Kannada.
Dr. Pradhan Gurudutt joined the Kuvempu Institute of Kannada Studies of
the Mysore University in 1967. He retired from service as a Reader of
Kannada in 1998. He is presently a Visiting Professor of the Kuvempu Chair
of the Institute.
Mysore Manjunath: Dr. Mysore M. Manjunath has earned fame as a violinist.
He is the son of veteran violinist Mr. Mysore S. Mahadevappa. An early
bird to the music field, Dr. Manjunath accompanied in his first concert at
the age of nine alone. He secured first rank and a gold medal from the
Mysore University and a similar recognition in the post-graduate course in
music. In 1991, he had the distinction of scoring the highest marks and
winning two gold medals and two prizes in the post-graduate course.
Recently, he secured a Ph.D. degree from the Mysore University.
An ‘A’ grade artist of the All India Radio, the violinist has given
several performances in India and abroad, along with his brother-musician
Mysore M.Nagaraj. The duo have performed in the Radio Sangeeth Sammelans
of the All India Radio, Madras Music Academy, National Unity Concerts,
Doordarshan National Music Programmes, Trivandrum Palace Programme and
Dasara Programmes in Mysore. He has won honours and titles for his mastery
over the stringed instrument.
Vasumathi: Ms. S.K.Vasumathi is a very popular voice in the Mysore Station
of All India Radio. She has been singing classical music and light music (Sugam
Sangeeth) in the AIR for the last 45 years. She has composed music for
over 200 songs of popular Kannada poets like Pu.Thi.Narasimhachar, Kuvempu
and D.V.Gundappa, and won appreciation from these stalwarts of Kannada
literary world. Ms. Vasumathi had made ‘Vanasuma’ programmes popular
by singing the latest songs written by the Kannada poets. Not only the
poems, the writers who had written those Kannada songs have also become
popular because of her rendering.
Ms. Vasumathi has given performances in Hyderabad Doordarshan centre,
apart from Mysore AIR. She has composed music for about 100 Haridasa
compositions, including that of saint-composer Kanakadasa. In recognition
of her service to music and light music, she has been conferred
‘Karnataka Kalashree’ and ‘Hamsa’ awards. She is the daughter of
late S.B.Krishnaswamy
